Solid Hardwood

Generally milled from a single piece of wood, solid hardwood flooring is a natural product that reacts to fluctuations in temperature and moisture by expansion and contraction. Therefore, we recommend that solid wood is only used in areas where there is little moisture, to reduce the risk of the floor suffering as a result of these conditions. For this reason, solid hardwood generally isn’t advised as the best choice for basements, given the high levels of moisture present in this part of a building. As the typical method of installing solid hardwood is by nailing or stapling it to a wood subfloor, it is generally unsuitable as a covering over the concrete subfloors that are commonly found in basements.

Engineered Wood

Engineered wood is constructed from a solid wood top layer that is attached to a core of several wood layers (or plies), which have been stacked and glued together under pressure. Often favoured as a practical alternative to solid hardwood, engineered wood flooring is less susceptible to expansion and contraction due to temperature and humidity changes. Thanks to the enhanced structural stability of engineered wood flooring, it can be adapted to a greater quantity of uses than its traditional counterpart. With the potential to be stapled, glued, or floated over concrete or plywood subfloors, this wood flooring can be adapted to various different environments, and can be installed on any level – including basements. For those who want to retain the natural, authentic look of quality wood flooring but find themselves limited by the existing conditions of the desired location, engineered wood can serve as an ideal alternative. With a reputable hardwood flooring company by your side, you can rest assured that your precise ambitions will be brought to life, even if it requires a little creativity when it comes to the exact materials at hand.
