When is it time to renovate your kitchen?

The kitchen is a key area of your house, one that sees a lot of activity, especially if you have a big family. Perhaps more so than any area of your house, the kitchen requires a lot of care, especially since it needs to be clean and sanitary to provide a healthy environment for your household.

However, kitchen renovations can be difficult to undertake. Between the inconveniences of renovation, the costs involved and the amount of planning necessary to get the project off the ground, many people prefer to put it off indefinitely. However, this could lead you to unnecessary frustrations. Here are a few reasons you may need to renovate your kitchen:

Deterioration

If your kitchen floor tiles are cracked, your cabinet doors fail to open and close, your countertops are water-damaged and peeling, and your kitchen wall paint is flaking, it is probably time to do something about it. A kitchen that’s falling apart at the seams is unsightly, and sometimes unsanitary. If you are also using out-of-date appliances, such as running refrigerators and leaking gas stoves, it can even be dangerous.

Out-of-date appearance

Unless you live in seclusion from society, if your kitchen looks like it belongs in an episode of I Love Lucy, you might want to think of renovating it, whether it’s deteriorating or not. As design trends march on, what used to be the norm in the past might look inefficient, dated, and sometimes even laughable today.

Difference in needs

Some kitchens can be perfectly fine for someone else, but woefully ill-adapted for you. For instance, a family with one child will not have the same needs in a kitchen as a family with five children, and someone who eats mostly pre-cooked meals will not require the same kind of kitchen as someone who prefers making home-made meals.

Convenience

Sometimes, the littlest things might end up driving you up the wall. It could be something as simple as a refrigerator door that hinders the kitchen entrance. Or perhaps the kitchen was designed with enough space for a trash bin, but not for a recycling bin. Some people might be able to tolerate those annoyances, but to some, it might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back and prompts a renovation.

Value

If you intend to sell your home, it might be a good idea to keep in mind that a beautiful and modern kitchen could significantly increase your property value and make your house or condo more attractive to prospective buyers. On the hand, a mangy and unappealing kitchen is liable to drop the property value and repel potential buyers.
