Real Hardwood, Built for Our Coast
Engineered hardwood is a real wood floor. The top layer is solid hardwood, the same oak, maple or walnut you would see in a solid board, bonded to a core of cross-layered wood. Because the layers run in different directions, the board resists the swelling and shrinking that solid wood goes through as the seasons change.
From across the room you cannot tell it apart from solid, and underfoot it feels the same. The difference shows up over the years: fewer gaps in winter and less cupping in a damp spring.
Where Engineered Hardwood Makes Sense
Condos and concrete slabs
Engineered hardwood can be glued down or floated over concrete with the right moisture barrier, which solid hardwood cannot. Before any floor goes over a slab, we test the concrete for moisture.
Radiant floor heating
Many engineered collections are rated for radiant heat. We confirm the rating and the installation method for the collection you choose. Flooring that works with radiant heat.
Wide planks
Wider boards move more with humidity. An engineered core keeps a wide plank flat, so you can have the look without the seasonal gaps.
Strata buildings
Paired with an acoustic underlay that meets your building's sound rating, engineered hardwood is the usual way to put real wood into a Vancouver condo.
What to Compare Between Samples
Wear layer. This is the solid hardwood on top. A thicker wear layer can be sanded and refinished more times over the life of the floor. Ask us to show you the wear layer on each sample; it matters more than the overall board thickness.
Core. Plywood and other cross-layered cores differ in stability and in how they handle moisture. We explain the trade-offs for your room.
Finish. Factory finishes are cured before the floor arrives, so there is no on-site finishing smell. Matte and brushed finishes hide everyday wear in a busy home.
Brands. We carry engineered collections from Lauzon, Mercier, Preverco, Biyork and Fuzion. See them at our showroom at 1420 Marine Drive, North Vancouver, open Monday to Thursday 10 to 5, Friday and Saturday 10 to 4.
Installed by Our In-House Crew
Your engineered floor is installed by our in-house crew and backed by our 3-year workmanship warranty, on top of the manufacturer's product warranty. We measure, check moisture and prepare the subfloor before installation, and most homes finish in about a week, including acclimation and prep. Planning a condo floor? Start with our strata approval guide, or compare engineered and solid hardwood in more depth.
Engineered Hardwood FAQs
Is engineered hardwood real wood?
Yes. The top layer you walk on is solid hardwood. It sits on a cross-layered wood core that keeps the board stable.
Engineered or solid hardwood for a Vancouver condo?
Engineered, in almost every case. It can go over concrete and radiant heat, and with the right acoustic underlay it meets most strata sound ratings.
Can engineered hardwood be refinished?
Yes, if the wear layer is thick enough. A thicker wear layer allows more sandings over the life of the floor, so compare wear layers when you choose.
Can engineered hardwood go over radiant heat?
Many collections are rated for radiant floors. We confirm the rating and the installation method for the floor you choose before we install it.
How long does installation take?
Most homes finish in about a week, including acclimation and subfloor preparation.
What warranty comes with engineered hardwood?
Two layers: the manufacturer's product warranty, which varies by collection, and our 3-year workmanship warranty on the installation.
